No family, regardless of their immigration status, should feel they must forego food assistance, health care, government services, worship, school, or their constitutionally protected right to participate in peaceful protest for fear of encountering violence at the hands of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement service (ICE).
That’s why CSPI supports the Protecting Sensitive Locations Act (H.R.1061/S.455), which would restore the protections afforded to sensitive locations such as schools, food pantries, and places of worship by limiting immigration enforcement actions within a 1,000-foot radius. These protections had been in place for more than thirty years before the Trump administration rescinded the policy.
This administration’s deployment of ICE agents is a threat to public health. Aside from traumatizing and terrifying communities, violence by ICE agents is adversely affecting access to nutrition and public health services. Some immigrant families feel compelled to stay in the shadows, skipping visits to health care providers and playgrounds, and not accessing critical services like school meals or nutrition assistance through food pantries. CSPI stands in solidarity with all families, including immigrant families seeking critical services, and in opposition to the cruel and unwarranted violence unleashed by the Trump administration in America’s cities.
