Statement of CSPI President Dr. Peter G. Lurie

For the last 13 months, Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., have been dismantling the nation’s public health infrastructure, sabotaging our biomedical research program, and, with the help of Republicans in Congress, plunging the country into a hunger and healthcare nightmare.

The nomination of unqualified wellness influencer and lifestyle blogger Casey Means to be the nation’s top doctor adds insult to ongoing injury. Part of Means’s brief seems to be to smear and sully modern medicine, and healthcare itself, as corrupt and malignant. This is a doctor, after all, who literally advises people not to trust their doctors. That’s a good thing to get people to believe if your income has depended on selling wearables, affiliate marketing for supplements, and the like; it’s also a useful thing to get people to believe when you are joining an administration so intent on taking their healthcare away.

Americans need and deserve reliable health advice from the Surgeon General. Means, however, can be expected to act as a virtual PEZ dispenser for RFK, Jr.’s misinformation. Having been so thoroughly conned by Kennedy at his confirmation hearing a year ago, Senate Republicans will soon indicate whether they’ve learned any lessons.
