Health advocates call on Trump administration to finalize proposals for transparency in alcohol labeling

Government AccountabilityAugust 15, 2025

Sign-on comments on Proposed Rule: Major Food Allergen Labeling for Wines, Distilled Spirits, and Malt Beverages

The undersigned organizations call on the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) to finalize the proposed rule mandating on-package labeling major food allergens and to propose a rule requiring full labeling of all ingredients. These rules will be a step forward, as current alcohol labels do not provide the information that consumers with food allergies need to make informed purchasing and consumption decisions. Food Labeling

Fact sheet: TRUTH in Labeling Act of 2025

Several countries, including Canada and Mexico, have policies requiring labels on packaged, processed foods to help people identify those that are high in saturated fat, sugars, and sodium. These labels must appear on the front of the package, where they are easily noticeable and quickly accessible to consumers. View the resource below to learn more.

The undersigned respectfully submit the following comments on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s proposed rule to require front-of-package nutrition labels on foods. CSPI comments RE: food labeling: front-of-package nutrition information, a proposed rule by the food and drug administration

CSPI has long advocated for FOPNL, first petitioning FDA to adopt a FOPNL system in 2006. In 2022, CSPI, the Association of SNAP Nutrition Education Administrators, and the Association of State Public Health Nutritionists filed an updated petition calling for mandatory, interpretive, nutrient-specific front-of-package nutrition labels. We are thrilled that FDA has taken the important step of proposing such a FOPNL system for the United States. View the resource below to read more.

Sign-on letter urging Trump administration to include alcohol in efforts to reduce chronic disease

We, the undersigned organizations, write today to call your attention to the negative health effects of alcohol and to ask you to inform consumers by moving forward with alcohol labeling proposals that will help fulfill President Trump’s goal of Making America Healthy Again. Excess consumption of alcohol is associated with injuries, motor vehicle accidents, and multiple chronic diseases, including liver disease and cardiovascular disease, and is a leading cause of preventable cancer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that, in 2020-2021 (the most recent year of data available), 178,000 deaths in the U.S. were attributable to excessive alcohol use (both acute and chronic).
