CSPI statement on White House Challenge to End Hunger and Build Healthy Communities

In 2024, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) will partner with community-based organizations led by people most impacted by food system inequities. CSPI commits to investing $1.5 million towards these partnerships through grantmaking to support state and local food policy priorities, convening leaders, elevating stories, and tracking public health trends and developments. In partnership with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and / or Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), CSPI will facilitate and disseminate research findings to support policy priorities. CSPI’s commitment advances an equitable food system, and extends from a growing partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies, From Now On Fund, and other interested funders.

The White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health: a report on progress after one year

One year ago, the Biden-Harris Administration convened the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health and released a National Strategy that put forward 196 federal government commitments to reduce hunger and diet-related disease. The Center for Science in the Public Interest advocated for, submitted policy recommendations to, and conducted listening sessions leading up to the Conference and were pleased to see that many of our recommendations were included in the National Strategy. CSPI reviewed the federal government’s progress on a subset of 106 Top Federal Commitments and assessed the extent to which stakeholder commitments aligned with the issues laid out in the federal commitments. Please view the report for our findings.

Urge Congress to Protect and Strengthen School Nutrition

Congress poised to leave healthy meals for kids out of stop-gap funding measure

While Congress is poised to avert a government shutdown today by passing a short-term funding bill through December, it will fail to include a pathway to free healthy school meals for all students, a key priority of the Biden administration’s recently unveiled National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health.

Biden administration national strategy endorses front-of-package labeling, healthy school meals for all

The National Strategy, released in advance of Wednesday’s White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, represents a significant step forward in the nation’s ongoing battle against food insecurity and diet-related disease. CSPI is thrilled to see several of our highest priorities, encapsulated in our July 15 letter to President Biden, included in the Strategy.
