CSPI's comments on the USDA's Request for Information (RFI)

The Center for Science in the Public Interest submits these comments in response to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Request for Information: Grain-Based Desserts and High-Protein Yogurt Crediting in Child Nutrition Programs. CSPI has worked since 1971 to improve the public’s health through better nutrition and safer food. We are an independent, nonprofit consumer education and advocacy organization and a longstanding advocate for healthier school foods. We convene the National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity, the nation’s largest nutrition advocacy coalition, which successfully advocated for updating the science-based nutrition standards following the passage of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. CSPI appreciates the USDA’s commitment to supporting school food authorities in aligning meals served with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. View the resource below to keep reading.

NANA coalition letter to strike the cheese sodium rider in FY24 appropriations

Earlier this year, the USDA issued a proposed rule to strengthen nutrition standards consistent with the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (“Child Nutrition Programs: Revisions to Meal Patterns Consistent With the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans”). The proposed rule would reduce sodium by 20 percent in school breakfasts and 30 percent in school lunches through a series of two-year 10 percent reductions through 2030. The proposed sodium limits apply to an entire meal averaged over the course of the week, allowing schools to balance higher sodium meals with lower sodium meals throughout the week. That ensures that schools can still serve a saltier cheesy pizza or cheeseburger one day, and a not-so salty entrée the next, which already gives dairy companies the flexibility to sell schools anything from Swiss cheese (a lower sodium cheese) to feta (one of the saltiest cheeses). View the resource below to continue reading.

Joint Letter re: Healthy Food Incentive Recommendations

The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) co-signed this letter thanking Secretary Tom Vilsack of the U.S. Department of Agriculture for his steadfast commitment to supporting schools in providing healthy meals, most recently demonstrated by the announcement of $100 million through the Healthy Food Incentive (HFI) Fund, and proposes the Agency dedicate the HFI Fund to reinstate three successful initiatives while expanding them to increase their efficacy and build the capacity of key stakeholders.
