Groups urge Bureau of Prisons not to privatize food service

Letter to Congress RE: Federal Bureau of Prisons Food Service & Commissary Operations Solicitation

A report released this month by the Carceral Nutrition Project and the Center for Science in the Public Interest, “Private Food, Public Harm,” documents the track record of privatized prison food contractors like Aramark in state and local corrections systems. Our findings are concerning. Aramark has been sued in over 500 lawsuits challenging carceral food service. A thorough literature review and key informant interviews indicate nutritional shortcomings, widespread food safety concerns, security lapses, and a pattern of cost-cutting that falls hardest on the roughly 405,000 people Aramark feeds daily in prisons and jails across 17 states. These are not isolated incidents. They are the predictable result of a business model that prioritizes profit over the people in its care. View the resource below to keep reading.

Letter to DOJ and Federal BOP RE: Federal Bureau of Prisons Food Service & Commissary Operations Solicitation

On May 4, 2026, we published a report, Private Food, Public Harm: Privatized Food Service in Prisons and Jails, which found that privatized food service in US prisons and jails raises serious concerns about nutrition, food safety, and oversight. The report focused on Aramark Correctional Services, which has the largest share (35 percent) of the US correctional food services market. If the agency proceeds to a formal solicitation, we anticipate that Aramark would be the leading bidder for food service. Its subsidiary, Union Supply Group, would likely bid for the commissary contract. When food service and commissary contracts are held by the same parent company, inadequate and inedible food in the dining hall can net the very same company big profits from resulting commissary sales. As you may be aware, Aramark is currently being sued in federal court for practices that allegedly violate consumer protection laws in West Virginia, where the company holds contracts for both food service and commissary in state prisons. Comment RE: Commissioner’s National Priority Voucher Pilot Program

Thank you for the opportunity to share our perspective on the Commissioner’s National Priority Review (CNPV) pilot program in written comments and at the public meeting. The undersigned individuals write to share our concerns and opposition to the Food and Drug Administration’s CNPV pilot, particularly relating to the politicization of voucher selection by the inclusion of national priorities falling outside of FDA’s remit, an expedited review timeline that poses dangers to consumers, and the lack of transparency in the implementation of the pilot. The Center for Science in the Public Interest is a non-profit consumer education and advocacy organization. Since 1971, CSPI has advocated for evidence-based policies to improve health, nutrition, and food safety. CSPI is an independent organization that does not accept any corporate funding. In this comment, we provide feedback on the CNPV pilot program’s scope, voucher selection process, the review council’s role, expedited timelines, and future programmatic directions. Virtual public meeting and listening session on food allergen thresholds and their potential applications

The Center for Science in the Public Interest appreciates this opportunity to comment on the topic of food allergen thresholds and their potential applications. This comment will focus on the use of thresholds in better aligning precautionary allergen labeling statements (e.g. “may contain peanuts”) with product risk to ensure meaningful communication to consumers. Specifically, we call on the FDA to issue regulations defining specific PAL statements and requiring that any such claims are informed by adequate risk assessment incorporating such thresholds.
