Book Launch for Brave New Teachers: Thursday, Dec. 1st

Join us at 5:30 pm in the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education ground floor library to celebrate the launch of Brave New Teachers. This timely new book is an investigation of democratic teacher practice in culturally diverse school systems. Based on an original study of the Urban Diversity Teacher Education Program at York University, it analyzes the extent to which teachers committed to equity, diversity, and social justice can effectively promote these principles in a climate of conservative school culture, and state-mandated educational reform focusing on standardization and accountability.

Refreshments will be served and there will be several speakers including Mrs. Sylvia Solomon, wife of the late R. Patrick Solomon; a panel discussion lead by John P. Portelli including several authors and participants of the project; and Professor Stan Shapson, former Vice President Academic at York University.

Description:

This book is about democratic teacher practices in a culturally diverse school system. It is based on a study that investigates the extent to which graduates of a teacher education program grounded in the democratic principles of equity, diversity, and social justice can integrate these principles into their pedagogy in a climate of conservative school culture and state-mandated educational reform that focuses on standards-based curricula and accountability. It provides a critical, Canadian perspective on the pedagogical and ethical dilemmas faced by teachers working for diversity and social justice. Extra materials available! Please click the Teacher's Guide button below the cover to the right for a Power Point presentation, developed by co-author Jordan Singer, to accompany Brave New Teachers in your course.
